Australian Healthcare System

Navigating the Australian Healthcare System

Australia has a comprehensive healthcare system that combines public and private services. Here's what you need to know as an international student.

Medicare vs OSHC

While Australian citizens and permanent residents use Medicare, international students must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). OSHC provides similar benefits but is specifically designed for students.

What OSHC Covers

  • Doctor visits (GP consultations)
  • Some hospital treatments
  • Ambulance services
  • Limited pharmaceuticals

Finding Healthcare Services

Most universities have on-campus medical centers. You can also visit any GP clinic that accepts OSHC. Always carry your OSHC card and student ID.

Emergency Services

In case of emergency, call 000 for ambulance, police, or fire services. Emergency department visits are covered by OSHC, but you may need to pay upfront and claim later.
